I'M PUMPED!!!!!!!!!!! Here's a few things I want you to know before you come tonight. If you haven't decided whether your coming or not, go ahead & make the decision to be there!

This is a test. Tonight and next Wednesday will be "test runs" of Life Groups. We want to cast vision for what we want to accomplish through life groups, then get feedback from you about what you like, don't like, love, hate, etc. Next Wednesday you will get the chance to give HONEST feedback anonymously. So come flexible and ready to have a great time!

Hey Middle & High School Students, there will be Life Groups for you! I don't need to go into much more detail than that. But if you are a middle school or high school student we have a life group for you tonight, same place, same time as the other life groups. Tomorrow, everyone at your school will be talking about it. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE LEFT OUT DO YOU?

CIRCLES ARE BETTER THAN ROWS!!! The Bible is really clear that you and I can't do this alone (our fourth core value, coming up in 2 Sunday's!!). You need friends who can encourage you, keep you going, help you in your walk with God. You will find that and more in Life Groups! Sunday's are awesome, but it takes what we do Sunday to another level when someone is looking at you helping you do what we talked about Sunday.

We don't have formal child care, but you can still bring kids. We won't have kids workers for Life Groups, but your still invited to come & bring your kids. Your group might even work up its own plan for childcare!

Seriously, come ready for a great time! Your going to get to know new people, and have a great time. So just be there!

I really do hope that you will make plans to be there, tonight, 6:30 the conference room at Primary Care Center.

Are you settling for a small vision for your life?

I'm reading "Living in the Gap Between Promise and Reality" right now. The book is about the life of Abraham and how Abraham points to the gospel. Early in the book, talking about how Abraham says to God "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing" (Gen. 17:18), the author points out that Abraham is trying to settle for a smaller vision for his life than the one God had for him (God didn't want to give Abraham a son by his wife's servant, he wanted countless descendants of his own, more than the stars in the sky). Then he gives the following quote:

"What about you? Are you settling for a vision that is too small in your life? Are you choosing the easy option because you don't really believe God can bring something great in your life? Yes, God sometimes calls us to be faithful in the little things, but is that really your calling, or are you afraid to hope for anything more? And what about your church? Do you expect to see God do great things there? Do you pray for God to do great things there, or are you content just to survive? All too often we don't really expect God to do anything dramatic, do we? It all seems to difficult to imagine. Yet we are part of an army with a great commission. We have received our marching orders to take the gospel to the ends of the earth: "God and make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19). Along with these instructions comes the divine promise: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (v. 20). If God is with us, then what task is impossible?"

The Danger of Drifting

"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it." Hebrews 2:1

If you look up the word "drift' in a dictionary, here's what you will find - "to be carried along by currents of water or air, or by the force of circumstances, to wander aimlessly."

Drifting is something that happens naturally. When I think about drifting defined as "to wander aimlessly" I think about people who are driving and it is obvious they don't know where they are going. Have you ever been behind someone like that? They drive VERY slow, they start to turn in somewhere then change their mind, they might even stop in the middle of the road to see if what they are looking at is what they are looking for, then they start driving again when they realize it isn't.

One of the best things that God does for us in the Bible is give us warnings. He warns us about certain things that otherwise we would miss. Drifting is one of those things. God is telling us here that we are in constant danger of drifting. Drifting from what? Drifting from believing that Jesus is all we need. Drifting from believing that Jesus is who we were made for. Drifting from believing that his plan for our lives is best. Drifting from the Gospel.

On its own, your heart never stays in one place. And what I need & you need to keep in front of us is that we need to make sure our hearts don't drift away from Jesus.

A key part of drifting is that it happens slowly. Drifting away from Jesus doesn't take place suddenly. It is usually a very long, slow process.

Cheating on your spouse usually starts with drifting. A few "innocent" text messages. The second, third, fourth, fifth look.

Pastors can drift from really following Jesus when they slowly decide to always play it safe instead of being obedient to God when he tells you to step out and take a risk.

You might decide your family is going to start going to church, then "things start to come up" and before you know it, your not going anymore. You drifted.

At one time you were going to tell your friend/classmate/coworker about Jesus, then you slowly started to think about what they might think about you if you do. In the end you don't say anything because you drifted from what God was telling you to do

It is so good to know that even though we are prone to drifting, Jesus is not. He is unwavering in his love and commitment to you if you've placed your faith in him.

So today, pause and ask yourself "Am I drifting?" What corrections do you need to make today?

Video Blog - Jesus really is the main thing

Jesus is not _____________. Kicks off this Sunday!

I am so excited about kicking off a brand new series at Summit this weekend, "Jesus is not _______________."!

Everyone has an opinion about who Jesus is. Today the opinions range from calling him simply a good man, to some calling him insane. But Jesus said amazing things about himself. He claimed to be God, he said he could forgive sins, he said he was the light of the world.

Starting this Sunday and for the nest four weeks, we will tackle a different misconception people have about Jesus. Each week we will fill in the blank, so when you come you will find out what we are talking about that morning.

Trust me, you don't want to miss it. If you've never been to church and don't believe in God, or you do believe in God and are interested in Jesus but have questions - you should come. And if your a Christian, not a part of a church, you should be there. What does your life say about who you believe Jesus is?

It all starts Sunday, 11 am at The Forum in Hazard. If you are a regular attender at Summit, then bring someone with you! Don't miss it, see you Sunday!

Here is the trailer for the series:

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://markcombs1978.blogspot.com/2011/10/jesus-is-not-kicks-off-this-sunday.html' title='Jesus is not _____________. If you see a movie that you really liked, you will probably tell someone they should see it. You've probably recommended a restaurant to someone or maybe somewhere to go on vacation.

What about church? Simply put, when was the last time you invited someone to church? If you love your church, invite people to it - A LOT! One of the great things that I've seen happen over and over in just 7 services at Summit (WOW, we've only had 7 services so far!!!) is how God uses people simply inviting their friends to church, they come, and are totally changed by the grace of God.

I've seen people invite a friend and that friend give their life to Jesus for the first time. Others invite a friend who hasn't been to church in decades to come to Summit with them, they come and are now serving on a regular basis in the church. People have come who have never been to church in their lives, and what was it that God used to bring them? An invite.

If the message of Jesus and eternal life and the freedom that he gives is true, then why wouldn't you regularly invite people around you to come to church with you to hear that message? If your church has or is making an impact in your life, why not invite others to be a part of it with you? If you love your church, invite someone to go with you. (If you don't love your church & wouldn't invite someone with you . . . that's another blog post)

Let me say something specifically for people at Summit. Before Sunday, let's invite people! I want this to be a part of our DNA - inviting people to church. You never know how God can use it! It can be as simple as something on facebook (& people have come to Summit based solely on a facebook invite). It can be giving one of the invite cards we always have available each Sunday to someone. It can be making a phone call, walking across the street, talking to the person in your class & just inviting them. You never know, God might change their life & he used you as a part of it!

So who are you inviting to church Sunday?

Always Hope . . .

One of the most depressing chapters of the Bible (depressing, at least, on the surface) has to be Genesis 5. Genesis 5 is a genealogy, 32 verses long, and what ties the whole chapter together is that everyone is dying.

"Adam lived . . .930 years, and he died. . . . all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. . . . and he died . . . and he died" The entire chapter - everyone dies. What has happened is Adam & Eve have sinned two chapters earlier. Then in Genesis 4, their son Cain kills his brother Abel. On the surface, if you were simply reading this, you might walk away thinking there is no hope.

But if we did that, then we would miss the point. What we need to remember is that the Bible is not a bunch of disconnected stories with disconnected chapters and verses. It is all one story and Jesus is the main character. If we keep tracing Adam's family line, eventually we come to Jesus (Luke 3:23-38).

If you look at Genesis 5 on its own, it looks like there is no hope - everyone is dying. But if you look at the big picture, you see Jesus who beat death and you realize everyone doesn't die. What looks like a hopeless situation is radically changed because there is always hope.

A lot of times we begin to believe there is no hope, or things will never work out, or we are stuck because all we can see is our current situation. But when you look at the bigger picture - namely that Jesus is alive, the he promises that for those who love him all things work together for good (Romans 8:28), there is always hope.

See, it is true there is always hope. But hope isn't some nameless force that you can supposedly have or believe in. Hope is a person - Jesus. If you have Jesus, there is always hope. Don't miss Him by simply looking at your circumstances. Instead look at your circumstances through Him and eventually hope will break into your heart.

If you don't have Jesus, there is still hope. Because He wants to give himself to you. He wants to change your life. You just need to go to him, in prayer & confess that He is your only hope. Ask him to forgive you for hoping in things other than him. Give him your life today because he is your only hope. & if you have him, then there is always hope.

Everyone doesn't have it all together . . .

I love how honest & raw the Bible is. This morning I read Genesis 12. If you are familiar with the Bible, the big event out of Genesis 12 is God calling Abram (later Abraham) to leave his country & go to a place God would show him. This is a MASSIVE moment in the Bible. Through this call would eventually come the nation of Israel, eventually Jesus would ultimately fulfill the promises & calling God gives here, & then the church. This is a pivotal moment in the Bible.

But what I find really helpful is that right after this epic call from God to Abram, after he packs up all his family & all they have to do what God tells them to do, you get this . . .

As he was approaching the border of Egypt, Abram said to his wife, Sarai, “Look, you are a very beautiful woman. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife. Let’s kill him; then we can have her!’ So please tell them you are my sister. Then they will spare my life and treat me well because of their interest in you.” (Gen 12:11-13)

The guy God just called, the guy God is going to use in an epic way, tells his WIFE to lie & tell people she is his SISTER so HE won't get killed. Talk about blowing it. Talk about messing up. Make no mistake about it, this was a sin. What is so encouraging to me is that God still uses him. God doesn't throw in the towel on Abram (and God had every right to). God keeps his promises and uses a guy that doesn't have it all together.

A lot of times I can start to think God isn't going to use me because I don't have it all together or because of some hang up in my life. Can you relate to that? The Bible never tries to hide the fact that the people God used did not have it all together. Peter totally denies that he even knows Jesus, yet God uses him to preach at Pentecost and the church is born. Paul called himself the "chief of sinners" but God used him to write most of the New Testament.

We live in a world of constant twitter updates and new facebook status'. Have you ever noticed how people typically only tweet the highlights? The great things their kids do, how everything they touch turns to gold, some great piece of wisdom. From the looks of the social media universe, everyone seems to be doing great & have it all together. But the Bible helps us to see behind the curtain. Everyone isn't who they are on facebook & twitter. Or even the person you look up to by reading their books, listening to them speak, you can start to think "I bet their kids always do the right thing", "I wish I was just like them", on & on. But what you don't see about the person is that everyday they need God's grace & forgiveness just like you do.

Now I'm not glossing over issues/sins in our lives. Those need to be repented of & dealt with. But I do want to encourage you today if your more aware of your sin than God's grace. If you think God can't use you because of (fill in the blank). If you feel like everyone has it all together except you. The truth is, everyone doesn't have it all together. The truth is, Jesus was the only person who had it all together & he lived, died, came back to life for you. He uses people who know they don't have it all together but have their hope in him.

Why does Summit only have one service a month? & an invite to our next one in a few days!

One of the questions I get asked as the lead pastor for Summit Community Church is why we only have one service a month?

As a new church in Hazard, we didn't simply want to start having weekly services. In fact, we won't start having weekly services until August 14. Right now we are doing what are called Preview Services.

Preview Services are meant to give people a preview of what Summit will be like once we start going on a weekly basis. Our prayer is that people would enjoy and be impacted by what they experience at Summit. We also hope that in the weeks between each service excitement builds among those who were at the last service so that they invite friends and family with them to the next service.

We also try to use the weeks between Preview Service to serve the community of Hazard & Perry County. This is one of our goals in our summer series of Movies In The Park.

Preview Services also help our team prepare for when we go to weekly services. The time in between each service allows us time to make necessary adjustments for the next service and when we begin having weekly services in August.

Our next Preview Service is THIS Sunday, May 22. It starts at 11am, at The Forum in the Hal Rogers Center in Hazard. I want to invite you to be a part of it! Maybe it's been a while since you've been to church or you've never been to church. Maybe you don't believe in God or your searching for answers to some big questions in life right now. Maybe you simply believe you should have a relationship with God and are looking for a place to help you know what that can look like, or your looking for a church you & your family can plug into, WHEREVER your at, WHOEVER you are, we want to invite you to come to Summit Community Church THIS Sunday, May 22.

Our awesome Summit K!DS team will be ready to go for kids nursery - elementary age. And you should dress casual. Our goal is that you would come as you are, but not leave that way.

Stop Waving the White-Flag

As I talk to Christians and many church leaders, I sometimes get the sense that they are waving the white-flag of surrender in certain areas of their life or ministry.

- I'll always be this way.
- I have always had this kind of attitude.
- Everyone acts/thinks/responds this way. Its normal.
- This has always been a problem in our community and it always will be.
- Our church will always be like this.

Maybe even as you read this there is an area in your life, your family, your church where you are unknowingly waving the white-flag of surrender. You've made peace with and have started to accept things that Jesus died and came back to life to set you free from. You've declared a cease fire against things that The Holy Spirit is calling you out of.

Maybe someone would say at this point, "But everyone struggles." True, Everyone does struggle. But if you are a Christian, the struggle does not define you. The victory that Jesus purchased in his life, death, and resurrection now defines you. The gospel defines you.

"If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." (Rom 8:13)
"put off the old self . . . put on the new self." (Col 3:9-10)

God never calls us to wave the white-flag in the face of things Jesus died to set us free from. So today if you are more aware of your struggle than his grace or more aware of all the times you've failed and your ready to give up, by faith look to what Jesus has already done for you and stop waving the white-flag of surrender.

The power of social media: is your church taking advantage of it?

One of the lessons learned from the unrest in Egypt is the power of social media (here and here are two articles that highlight it). As a church planter, I can attest to the fact that social media such as facebook and twitter have changed the game when it comes to how we communicate and get our message out to masses of people.

Unfortunately, I know far more churches who are not using any social media than those who are. I hear pastors and leaders say "I don't have time to use things like that", or "I don't know how", and then the standard "those things are worthless" then they usually follow up a long discourse about how you can't experience true community through facebook.

I'm not saying that people should stop going to church and just hang out on facebook all day instead. What I am saying is that if your church isn't taking advantage of social media you are missing the potential of exposing people to your ministry and your message.

The first thing the church plant I'm leading did was start a facebook page. Our strategy was and is, to become friends with as many people as possible who live in the area we are planting in. As of today, we have 1078 friends. The day we opened our facebook page, people started contacting us asking about the church and expressing a desire to be a part of what we are doing. We had our first public event in January and every single person who came indicated they heard of us and what we are doing through facebook.

We started a twitter account, which is not as widely used in our area as facebook. We also started a blog. We blogged regularly about our vision, who we are, and really tried to introduce ourselves to people. Now we have a permanent web site and are currently revamping our blog to focus on a major fundraising campaign we are about to start. What we try to do everyday on facebook is add a minimum of 30 friends, and update our status or tweet (our facebook and twitter accounts are linked) what we are doing, a quote, or an event. All in all, it may consume 30 minutes in a day.

For everyone who says they don't have time to put into things like facebook and twitter, I would say you can't afford to not use social media. If you don't know how to set up a facebook account or twitter account, have someone show you how. Here's some tips I would give to churches and leaders on using social media

- Use it! If your a pastor, leader, you should be on facebook, you should be on twitter, you should blog. You should be tweeting drops of your sermons you are working on, links to your messages. If you honestly think your message is important enough to give a massive chunk of your week preparing, and you think it will impact peoples lives, then you should be pointing people to your content. And to be frank, if you don't think what your saying is important or God can use to change lives, you probably shouldn't preach Sunday.

I don't get legalistic about a certain amount of times to tweet or post something on facebook, but it is about putting yourself and the message out there for people to know. This is ESPECIALLY true for church planters. As I meet with people and talk to them about the vision for our church, they ask a lot of questions about me. Planters really embody the vision of their church and so people are buying into the planter. Social media gives people a chance to get to know you outside of an initial meeting to hear you talk about the church or outside of team meetings.

Equip others in your church or on your team to take this on - Somewhere in your church is a teenager or an adult that you can equip to take on the social media arm of your church. Pour into them that they are doing something that is significant to your churches mission (you need to believe that first).

Establish a social media strategy - Lifechurch.tv is a great example of a church that has adopted a simple yet aggressive facebook strategy. Get with your leaders and adopt a facebook strategy for your area. When I was a youth pastor and myspace was the leader in social media, our strategy was to friend every student in the local high school. If your a small group leader or Sunday School teacher, it may be to start a facebook page for your group, then have those in the class point those in their networks to your page. Then as you post photos and event info, people outside of the group are being exposed to it. Again, this should not be your evangelism strategy, but I do think it needs to be a part of it.

One of the best parts of this is that regardless of your ministry size, social media will fit into your budget - its free!!! I would love to hear how your church and ministry is using facebook, twitter, and other social media. Have you seen a positive response from your social media strategy or use?

Church Planting books you MUST read

If your a church planter, a church looking to plant another church or sponsor a church plant, or simply want to read more on church planting, here are some of the books that I think you have got to read. Do you have momentum? What is the condition of the soil that you are planting in? Should you hit the eject button? I would encourage you to read this and then take an honest look at your surroundings and what God is doing around you.

Church Planting Landmines by Tom Nebel & Gary Rohrmayer
What sets this book apart is that it focuses on what can destroy a church plant in years 2 through 10. Regardless of what stage you are at in planting, this book will help you and your team. I plan on having our team refer back to this book regularly for years to come.

Launch by Nelson Searcy
When I finished reading this book someone asked me if it was good & my response was that it was so practical it was like someone wrote a book about putting on your pants. If you are thinking "God called me to plant a church, now what?", then you need to check out this book. The only book that goes into more practical detail, in my opinion, is Stetzer's book. Raising funds, where to meet, gathering a core team, systems, what to do after you launch and more, its all here.

Church Planter by Darrin Patrick
This book focuses on three areas: The Man, The Message, and The Mission. Here's a great quote, "We plant churches because our love for God is so strong we can't do anything else."

Planting Missional Churches by Ed Stetzer
This is another one-stop resource that you will probably refer back to again and again. We are all busy. As far as church planting goes, there are always things to do, people to talk to, resources to raise, and things to plan. All of us have deadlines, projects and things that are grabbing for our attention.

Jesus' interaction with Mary and Martha is familiar to a lot of you.

"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”" Luke 10:38-42

Martha and Mary invite Jesus into their home, Mary focused on spending time with Jesus, Martha focused on getting things done.

In the sermons and things I've read about this passage, Martha can be portrayed as the bad guy. But Jesus doesn't view her that way. She is running around, anxious, worried, trying to knock out her to do list, and Jesus doesn't condemn her for that. Instead he simply says "you are worried and upset about many things." In other words, what she wanted to do was good, but it dominated her.

Have you ever felt like your lists of things to do was pushing you around? Jesus wants Martha to see that there are things that needed to get done, but the most important thing was spending time with him. And when that is our priority, it will put our daily tasks in their proper place.

That list of things that needs to get done . . . it does need to get done. You need to do the project, you need to go to the meeting. However, more important than anything on our to do list is spending time with Jesus.

Spending time worshiping him, repenting of sin, listening to him. That is the one thing that Mary chose that cannot be taken from her. It's the one thing that cannot be taken from you. There is more to get done today than you and I will be able to do. But the good news is that our productivity doesn't define us. And our lack of productivity doesn't condemn us. Who you are in Jesus defines you.

Being with Jesus will shape how you and I view what needs to get done. When I forget that he is in control and cares for me to the degree that he does, then things on my plate can freak me out. But when I see that he really is in control and his promises are true for me, I can get things done, and worship while I do it.

So today, there are things you need to do. But before you start trying to get things done, maybe you need to stop and be reminded of who is in control of your to do list.

There should be great churches everywhere

When God called my family and I to plant a church in Hazard, KY, we were really excited. Being from Hazard, I am aware of the need for more churches here and throughout Eastern KY who want to see Jesus lifted up and people transformed. I love this area and the people.

Church planting is really popular right now, and it should be. It is biblical and should never go out of style. There is a lot of talk about planting in major urban centers and suburbs, and there needs to be. But one of the things I have noticed is that there is not a lot of talk about planting in smaller towns or rural settings.

There needs to be great churches everywhere. In New York City, Chicago, Lexington KY, and Hazard KY, and in all small towns and cities all over the world. There are people who need to be reached, people who need the love of Jesus, marriages that need to be healed, men that need to be trained to lead their families and their world, addictions that need to be broken - in every place where there is people.

So while I would urge you to plant churches in larger cities and suburban areas. Don't rule out small towns. And pray that God would raise up an army of planters who are called to the cities and towns that are not on everyone's radar. Wherever there are people, there needs to be great churches.

The world needs another blog

Okay, not really.
